where there's smoke, there's fire	нет ды́ма без огня́	Word for word 'no smoke without fire'. ⚠️ IrregularAfter нет comes the genitive (ды́ма, огня́).
barking dogs don't bite	ла́ющая соба́ка не куса́ет	Same image as in English. 🔗 Word familyла́ющая is the participle of ла́ять 'to bark'.
kill two birds with one stone	уби́ть двух за́йцев одни́м вы́стрелом	Russian kills two hares (за́йцы), not birds — with one shot (вы́стрел).
cost an arm and a leg	сто́ить це́лое состоя́ние	🔀 Several meaningsсостоя́ние = 'a fortune' (also 'condition'). Don't confuse сто́ить 'to cost' with стоя́ть 'to stand'.
don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today	не откла́дывай на за́втра то, что мо́жешь сде́лать сего́дня	откла́дывать = to put off. Trap: за́втра = tomorrow, but за́втрак = breakfast.
better late than never	лу́чше по́здно, чем никогда́	The д in по́здно is silent: [по́зна]. ⚠️ Irregularлу́чше is the irregular comparative of хоро́ший 'good'.
silence is golden	молча́ние — зо́лото	Full version: сло́во — серебро́, молча́ние — зо́лото ('speech is silver, silence is golden'). The dash replaces 'is'.
